EMSC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ADOLESCENTS AT RISK FOR HIV
  1. EMS-EMSC personnel should have special knowledge, skills and sensitivity to engage, properly assess and intervene with the unique physical, emotional and developmental problems of adolescents.
  2. There should be specific educational goals and specific educational programs to help providers care for this special need population.
  3. HIV counselling and testing is not part of acute emergency assessment or management for adolescents.
  4. Prehospital and emergency department providers should have a mechanism for community referral for HIV counselling and testing.
  5. Emergency services personnel should be familiar with local health and social services agencies and programs for care of high risk youth.
  6. A local plan for EMSC within EMS should address linkages between prehospital-ED adolescent services and other related agencies and services in the community for high risk youth.
