EMSC RECOMMENDATIONS FOR ADOLESCENTS AT RISK FOR HIV
- EMS-EMSC personnel should have special knowledge, skills and sensitivity to engage,
properly assess and intervene with the unique physical, emotional and developmental
problems of adolescents.
- There should be specific educational goals and specific educational programs to help
providers care for this special need population.
- HIV counselling and testing is not part of acute emergency assessment or management
for adolescents.
- Prehospital and emergency department providers should have a mechanism for
community referral for HIV counselling and testing.
- Emergency services personnel should be familiar with local health and social services
agencies and programs for care of high risk youth.
- A local plan for EMSC within EMS should address linkages between prehospital-ED
adolescent services and other related agencies and services in the community for high
risk youth.
